Help and Resources: Respondus Lockdown Browser

Respondus LockDown Browser

Respondus LockDown Browser is a secure browser designed for taking tests in Blackboard Learn. It ensures a controlled testing environment by preventing printing, copying, visiting other URLs, or accessing other applications during an exam. If a test requires LockDown Browser, you cannot use a standard web browser.

Important: Use LockDown Browser only for Blackboard tests, not other areas of Blackboard. It’s compatible with Windows, Mac, iPads (if enabled by your instructor), and Chromebooks, but not smartphones.

Installing LockDown Browser

Windows and Mac Computers:

  1. Download and install LockDown Browser for FVTC: Download Link
  2. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation.

iPads (requires iOS 11 or higher):

  1. Go to the App Store, search for "Respondus LockDown Browser," and download the app.
  2. Launch the app. (Some systems may require logging into Blackboard via a standard browser first, then launching LockDown Browser from the quiz page.)
  3. First-time users: Select your institution by searching for “Fox Valley Technical College” (not “FVTC”). To change this later, use the settings icon in the app’s toolbar.

Chromebooks:

  1. Use this installation link: Installation Link
  2. You’ll be directed to the Chrome Web Store; select “Add to Chrome” to install the LockDown Browser Extension.

Taking a Test with a Webcam (Respondus Monitor)

Some exams may require LockDown Browser with a webcam (Respondus Monitor) for non-proctored online tests. You’ll need a working webcam, microphone, and high-speed internet.

  • Follow steps 1-5 from the “Taking a Test” section above. The webcam Startup Sequence will begin, requiring you to agree to the Terms of Use.
  • Use the System Check in the Help Center to verify your webcam, microphone, and system requirements.
  • Follow the onscreen instructions, which vary based on your instructor’s settings. Track your progress at the top of the screen.
  • If issues arise, click “It’s not working” for troubleshooting tips.
  • The test will start after the Startup Sequence. You cannot exit until the test is submitted.
