Tests & Testing: GED

Why should a student get a GED? You need proof that you can show up and get things done.

Some of the things (life) that made it hard for you to complete High School may still be a part of your life.

Getting the GED or HSE is essential for

  • getting basic jobs
  • preparing you to enter a college or university program
  • proving to employers that you can follow instructions and finish projects

Definitions:

GED For a Certificate of General Educational Development (GED), you must pass tests in math, science, social studies, language arts and civics.

HSED For a High School Equivalency Diploma, you must pass the GED tests and complete additional work in health, employability skills, and career awareness.

Most employers today require at least a high school diploma or the equivalent. The GED and HSED are high school equivalency tests that meet this requirement. The GED is accepted by most employers, technical colleges and community colleges. However, some employers, universities and branches of the military require a High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED).

GED/HSED is just one step on the ladder to success. After you pass...

Congratulations, you passed. Now what? Reality Check. The easy part is over. Good news: You have shown the fortitude and persistence to go to the next level. The next step is to work on both your academic skills and your employability skills.

When you think about what you want to do for a living, start with thinking about what you value.  Try to find a career that lets you live your values.
