Best Practices for Universal or Inclusive Design for Learning

Best practices:
Perceivable - read, watch, hear

  • Provide sufficient contrast between foreground and background but don’t use color alone to convey information. (Color blind or impaired vision.)

Operable/ easy Navigation - tabs, arrow keys, mouse

  • Visible keyboard focus:  border or highlight on hover or click.
  • Provide clear and consistent navigation options.
  • Provide easily identifiable feedback. (Make it obvious what is supposed to go into a form field.)

Understandable: KISS

  • Srceen Reader Access - Page read aloud is not annoying or confusing.
  • Ensure that form elements include clearly associated labels.
  • Logical content and heading hierarchy.
  • Use headings and spacing to group related content.

Robust

  • Remain usable as formats and devices evolve.
  • Device agnostic -  mobile, PC & IOS environments.

Considerations:

Device Agnostic: (Not based on a particular platform)  multi-platform functionality with no favored platform. Mobile - PC - IOS -Screen-reader

Dexterity: Alternatives to keyboard or mouse?

Executive Function: Provide time management tools & tips; Sequential instructions, organization and tutorials; Goals or Learning objectives as Key Concepts or Tabs

Learning Management: Teacher-led, self-led , or mix?

Language: Non-English speakers, dyslexia, hearing vs reading, fluency

Memory: Chunk information for easier learning and recall

Understandability: KISS - Consistency, lack of clutter (cognitive load), cues for next action, sequential and logical instructions
